Forrester Research Inc. recently published a report in which they stated that most mid-market B2B companies want all of their technology from one vendor when they upgrade their eCommerce technology platforms. The report defined these mid-market companies as organisations which generate between £20 million and £380 million in annual revenue. The report moved on to state that 62% of these mid-market B2B companies with plans to change or upgrade their eCommerce platform will choose a “single stack solution.” Forrester define a single-stack solution as an eCommerce platform that bundles all of the features a company needs from one provider, rather than piecing together various technologies.Read more...
“Mid-market companies don’t want the hassle of trying to integrate a whole bunch of different systems,” says
Andy Hoar, a principal analyst at Forrester
who focuses on B2B e-commerce. “They want something that works as a whole and might even be willing to compromise on functionality if they can get all their systems in a more easily managed environment.”
Forrester found that easily maintaining a unified system was the prevalent reason businesses gave for following this route. The 75 global mid-market B2B e-commerce decision makers surveyed also listed real-time data access and increased agility as reasons for going with a packaged system. Furthermore, these decision makers gave the following as the main reasons for choosing a one technology system, with those who responded able to choose more than one answer:
- Maintaining the system is easier: 63%
- Greater agility: 60%
- It streamlines business operations: 57%
- It provides a centralized source of real-time data: 51%
- The system is integrated and operational out of the box: 43%
- Don’t need to hire specialized IT staff: 25%
All of this makes perfect sense. It is fully understandable that these decision makers would be keen to follow this path. Why would you not want to remove complexity, reduce cost, facilitate innovation and have your new platform operational as quickly as possible? Yet, the ultimate dream of a single stack technology is actually out of reach for most companies as how can their landscape be truly single stack when the eCommerce platform resides outside of their core business platform and then needs to be integrated. Surely, this prevents the realisation of the single stack utopia? However, for organisations who run SAP ERP at their core, this utopia can be genuinely achieved thanks to the Omnia solution. This solution offers all of the features and functionality you could ever require from a B2B eCommerce platform but does so whilst being delivered natively inside SAP without the need for any integration. The SAP Certified Omnia solution sits alongside your existing SAP modules and simply utilises the master data and business processes residing within SAP. Surely this sounds like the true realisation of the single stack model. Let us look at the reasons why decision makers were looking to choose a one technology system again and then reflect on why adopting Omnia surpasses their expectations:
- Maintaining the system is easier:
You only need to maintain one system - SAP
- Greater agility:
You only need to think about the repercussions of innovation in one location – SAP
- It streamlines business operations:
You do not get much more streamlined than all business and eCommerce operations taking place in one system - SAP
- It provides a centralized source of real-time data:
There is only one source of real time data with no need for integration between the eCommerce platform and SAP
- The system is integrated and operational out of the box:
Omnia implementations are quicker as they do not include a need for integration. The product is feature rich straight out of the box
- Don’t need to hire specialized IT staff:
Definitely not, Omnia is so SAP centric in its approach that your existing in-house SAP expertise will understand this product
So, whilst the desire to adopt a single stack technology for eCommerce is clear and understandable. For the SAP customer base, the ability exists to have a single stack to cover ERP and eCommerce with zero integration. Omnia increases your ROI from SAP by ensuring SAP remains the single stack.
On top of this, for organisations who want to offer more than solely B2B eCommerce – Omnia provides a functionally rich platform from which to offer omni-channel B2C eCommerce as well. It also provides for B2E applications and the methodology proves equally effective in the world of the Supply Chain where an Omnia Supplier Portal delivers tangible efficiencies and improved collaboration with suppliers.
Another survey included in the same Forrester report found that one of the top-priorities in terms of technological investment for 48% of mid-market companies in 2016 was integrating their eCommerce platform with their backend systems. Omnia eliminates the need to invest in the integration of the eCommerce platform with the back end system. The methodology ensures that no integration is required.
Omnia goes beyond the single stack solution which the surveyed eCommerce decision makers were aiming for. Their aim was to deliver a single stack eCommerce solution and then integrate that with the single stack ERP platform, whereas Omnia ensures that there is a single stack which delivers both.
